Debt Counselling - Implementing the Process

Course Overview:

In this advanced short course, we provide an in-depth exploration of the debt review process in terms of industry practice and the Task Team Guidelines. From the application for debt review with a Form 16 to rehabilitation, the entire process is explained.

We explain how a debt counsellor should process an application for debt review and what the consultation with the consumer entails. This includes how the debt counsellor should understand the needs of the consumer (considering LSM groupings in South Africa) and how he/she should manage this consultation.

The next step is described in detail and provides insights into how to make a reckless credit determination with practical examples, calculating a re-payment plan proposal, and using the DCRS. Withdrawals and transfers are explained, as well as terminations in terms of the NCAA. The role of the NCT and the Magistrates’ Courts are also explored. Learners can also expect to gain clarity on after care and the importance of monitoring repayments, as well as a debt counsellor’s responsibility in NCR compliance and reporting.

Note: This short course does not replace the NCR’s Debt Counselling Programme and cannot be used to register as a debt counsellor with the NCR. This is a refresher training programme for existing registered debt counsellors.
